LAMATA was set up as a semi-autonomous agency to ensure the highest level of service in public transportation in the Lagos metropolis. It was established with the World Bank’s collaboration in the form of technical advice and direct financial assistance to the tune of $100 million credit and mandatory Lagos State counterpart contribution of $35 million LAMATA’s long-term goal is to make public transportation, affordable, rapid, efficient, effective and accessible to all and sundry in metropolitan Lagos.

LAMATA is poised to formulate and implement policies and strategies, plan, coordinate, and manage activities and programmes that will produce and sustain a holistic, efficient and effective public transportation system that supports poverty reduction, provides economic opportunities and promotes viable communities in metropolitan Lagos. LAMATA will carry out this task to the best international standards

Lagos turns to non-motorised transport to curb congestion

As part of its mandate to give Lagos a world class transportation system, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) is promoting Non-Motorised Transport system (NMT) for the state.

Lagos State orders 1st BRT cooperative out of Mile 12- CMS BRT corridor

The Lagos State Government has directed the relocation of the operations of the 1st BRT Cooperative run by the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW, Lagos State Council) from the Mile 12 to CMS Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor with immediate effect.


The following are the broad objectives for which LAMATA was set up:

Programmes and Policies

To formulate and implement programmes and policies for the overall improvement of public transportation systems


To carry out the comprehensive maintenance of roads and related infrastructure, inventory of road and transport network, continuous evaluation of road network status.

Structure Development

To provide the enabling environment for orderly and structured development of the mass transit system, among others


To put in place strategies to ensure overall improvement in traffic flow and planned and programmed traffic engineering and management works.


Optimal utilisation of intermodal means of transportation including road, waterways, rail and non-motorised transport

Poverty Alleviation

The agency will assist in poverty alleviation by increasing economic efficiency through lower transport costs and prices, and enhancement of employment and social opportunities
