The construction of two interchange hubs at Mile 2 and Marina commenced today with the groundbreaking ceremony performed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi leading Agence Francaise De Development (AFD) and the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (LAMATA) officials at the event.
The interchange project aims to improve public transportation in Lagos by integrating different modes of transportation and providing seamless connectivity among Rail, Water, and Road transportation.
Mr. Osiyemi lauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for initiating the project, which he enthused will have a positive impact on Lagos residents.
He stated that the project was in tandem with the T-pillar of the T.H.E.M.E. S+ development agenda, which focuses on Traffic Management and Transportation, stating that on completion, the interchange hub will facilitate seamless commuter transfers from one mode to the other.
According to him, “This project is aimed at reducing journey time and integrating our different transport modes, including land, water, and rail. This is to ensure that transportation in Lagos is in cognizance of our people.” He assured the people of Lagos that upon completion, the project will bring ease and improve transportation for all.
The project is being funded with credit from AFD and counterpart funds from the Lagos State Government.
The Country Director of AFD, Mr. Xavier Muron highlighted the involvement of his organization in funding transport projects in Lagos. He recalled that when he first came to Lagos 33 years ago, the challenge with first and last mile of transportation trips was a challenge, informing the reason behind the funding of the interchange hubs and Quality Bus Corridors.
“We can’t wait to see the impact of these hubs, which are set to be a game changer in the transportation sector of Lagos State.” Mr Muron said.
He said he was looking forward to be part of the operations of the interchange hubs in another 15 months.
The project has been divided between two contractors. CCECC will be responsible for the construction of the Mile 2 interchange, while Step Construction Company will handle the Marina interchange.
During the ceremony, LAMATA’s MD, Engr. Mrs Abimbola Akinajo emphasized the importance of completing the project within the designated timeframe of 15 months.
She thanked the AFD and team, stating, “Their expertise and commitment have laid a strong foundation for what promises to be a transformative project for our city.”
The (AFD) team was led by The Country Director, Mr. Xavier Muron, Mr.David Margonaztern, and with him, the project team lead Mr. Antoine LE Bihan and Mr. Zak Clarke.
