Biogas may replace fossil fuel as one of alternative fuels for public transportation in Lagos.

Buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas will be deployed for passenger operations in Lagos in the last quarter of this year barring any unforeseen hitches.

The news is coming against the backdrop of the plan by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to introduce the use of biogas as an alternative fuel for the running of public transit buses to cut emissions as part of an effort by the Lagos State Government to achieve net zero emission by 2050.

In a bid to produce an implementation framework for the use of alternative fuels, therefore, LAMATA today held a stakeholder engagement program where the final report of the assessment and feasibility study of alternative fuels for public transportation was presented.

The event hosted the top echelon of administrators in the environment, transportation, and energy sectors led by the Hon Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Seun Osiyemi, Managing Director of Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, General Manager Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, Vice President Oando Clean Energy Limited, Mr. Ademola Ogunbanjo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs Titilayo. Oshodi, Managing Director Ibile Oil & Gas Corporation, Mrs. Doyin Akinyanju, Mrs. Tari Taylaur, SA, to the Governor on the Environment and the General Manager, Lagos State Wastewater Management Office, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi.

The study, conducted by CPCS Transcom Limited in collaboration with Nexant Consulting and funded by Swede Fund, thoroughly examined various alternative fuel options and narrowed the decision down to biogas, which will be the source of usable biomethane.

The study identified various feedstock sources to fuel the biogas plant, including sewage from treatment facilities, organic waste from households and markets, slaughterhouse waste, and animal manure. It also mapped out the key stages of the project: feedstock acquisition, transportation, storage and processing, biogas production, and integration with the public bus system.

LAMATA’s Managing Director Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo referenced a recent visit to Linköping, Sweden, a city with zero carbon emissions. She positioned adopting biogas as a significant stride towards a more sustainable Lagos. Additionally, she reaffirmed LAMATA’s dedication to collaboration in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the state’s climate action plan.

Mrs. Akinajo explained that the stakeholder meeting engagement reflected LAMATA’s commitment to collaboration, knowledge sharing, and stakeholder involvement, noting that the presence of everyone was a testament to the collective dedication to advancing public transportation in Lagos.
