Blue Line receives sustainability boost with test of Independent Power Plant

For reliability and sustainability of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line, the system’s independent power system has been completed and currently undergoing testing.

The power system, with its six sub stations, installed along the corridor, is aimed at improving the efficiency and reliability of the Blue Line.

The independent power plant is a standby system for the main power source from the national grid through the Eko Electricity Distribution Company from its Ijora and Akongba sub-stations.

The Blue Line power plant is a diesel rotary uninterruptible power supply devices (DRUPS) system, the second of its type in Nigeria.

The DRUPS is activated when grid supply fails or goes beyond tolerance limits, stored energy in the flywheel is released instantly to drive the electrical generator, which continues to supply power without interruption till the diesel engine starts. The system therefore guarantees constant supply of electricity to the train system including the stations.

A Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) team led by the Director of Rail Transport, Engr. Olasunkanmi Okusaga during a visit to the power plant was taken through the installation and the working of the system.

Engr. Okusaga described the power system as huge stating that the government was happy because the system is scalable and would be able to cater to the power needs of the entire line up to Okokomaiko.

The climax of the inspection was the presentation of the system’s architecture and test reports to confirm the ruggedness of the system powered by devices from renowned original equipment manufacturers. The documents were presented to LAMATA by Mr. Habeeb Alebiosu, Group CEO of Viathan representing the Consortium, Engr. H.G Momoh, representative form the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Victor Adedeji from Advad Ltd, Timi Soleye, Lampturnkey, Mide Popoola and other members of technical.
