At the 10th Lagos International Climate Change Summit, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) took centre stage, showcasing its new Multimodal Transport Plan as a weapon against climate change.
The Summit itself emphasized the urgency of climate action, with a focus on securing funds and developing local initiatives for adaptation.
Resilient infrastructure, empowered communities, and incorporating the voices of vulnerable populations were all highlighted as crucial for success.
Leading the LAMATA charge was Managing Director Engr. (Mrs.) Abimbola Akinajo. She unveiled the Strategic Transport Master Plan, a roadmap for implementing transportation projects and integrating different modes of transport across Lagos.
This plan goes beyond traditional options, prioritizing non-motorized transport and even introducing electric vehicles into the city’s fleet.
Meanwhile, the Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi highlighted the fulcrum of the State’s new transport policy specifically designed to improve connectivity between roads, railways, and waterways.
This focus on a multimodal system will offer residents more sustainable travel options and reduce reliance on personal vehicles.
While the focus was on environmental impact, safety was not downplayed.
Mr. Idowu Oguntona, Managing Director of Lagos Bus Services Limited (LBSL), addressed the importance of safe bus operations and their rigorous driver vetting process, ensuring passenger safety remains a top priority.
By combining a multimodal approach with a commitment to clean and safe transportation, LAMATA is positioning Lagos for a more sustainable and livable future.
